A Christmas Carol opens with the protagonist, Ebenezer Scrooge, a stingy businessman as the meanest miser in Victorian London, who thinks only of making money. He overworks and underpays his humble clerk. For him, Christmas is; in his own words, a humbug. ­ is old bitter miser is haunted and visited by the ghost of his dead business partner, Jacob Marley. ­ Then he was given a chance for redemption when he is haunted by three ghosts on Christmas Eve.
