The book, based on through research, grew out of a longish essay, which had won a prize in the International Essay competition on the "Glory of ancient Bharat ", in 1982. It deals with Ancient India's Contribution to world culture in various fields, such as Religion & Philosophy; Language & Literature; fine arts; science & Engineering; education & astrology; Political thought & military science. the great heights reached by ancient Indians in all fields of knowledge attracted the attention of all. the Syrian monk - astronomer, Severus sebokht, wrote in 622 A.D. : "I shall now speak of knowledge of Hindus ..... of their subtle discoveries in the science of astronomy - discoveries even more ingenious than those of the Greeks and Babylonians - of their rational system of mathematics, or of their method of calculation which no words can praise strongly enough - I mean the system using nine symbols. " Even four centuries later, the Arab astronomer-cum - science historian, said -Al-Andalusia, of the eleventh century A.D., in his book, kitab tabakat al-Umam, gave the first place to India among contemporary nations which had developed sciences till his time. similarly, the famous German thinker max Muller has profusely praised ancient Indians for developing fully some of the choicest gifts of the human race.The whole of south -East Asia, Sri Lanka , and most of central Asia received much of their culture from India, while China, Korea, Japan and West Asia were greatly influenced by the Indian Culture. Indeed, the luster of Indian culture enlightened the whole civilized world. Dr. B.C. Chakravorty (b. 1926), M.A., Ph. D. (Calcutta), had lectured in History in several colleges in Calcutta and elsewhere for over 12 years, before working in senior positions in the ministry of defense and the department of cabinet affairs, government of India. He was director of the history division of the ministry of defense studies; visiting professor in the department of the defense studies, Punjabi University, Patiala; visiting fellow at the strategic & Defense studies center, Australian National University, Canberra; Member of the Indian Historical Records commission; Official delegate to the International congress of historical science at Moscow in 1970; and Executive member of the International commission on the history of the second world war. He traveled in Europe, Australia, and South-East Asia, and lectured in several Universities and Research Institutes.an eminent military historian, his important publications include;-(i) British Relations with the Hill Tribes of Assam Since 1858, Calcutta, 1964;(ii) History of the Indian armed forces in Congo, Delhi 1976;(iii) Australia's Military Alliances : A study in foreign & Defense Policies, Delhi 1977; (iv) stories of Heroism, Government of India, New Delhi 1995. His Histories of the Indo-Pak War (1965) and The Bangladesh War (1971) are awaiting publication in the history division, ministry of defense, government of India. His Essays have won gold medal and national and international awards. His deep interest in the study of Indian culture is responsible for the conception of this book.
