This authoritative and exhaustively researched 4 volume work gives a collection of the unedited documents, field dispatches, court proceedings, telegrams etc., preserved in the Military Department of the Imperial Government of India, relating to the Revolt of 1857; the documents are of the pre, contemporary, and post the mutiny period. The author was the Keeper of the Archives (then known as the Imperial Record Department), and had access to all sorts of documents, narratives, treaties, archives, both British and Indian. The book is divided geographically. The 1st volume gives the documentation for Barrackpore, Behrampore, Meerut, and Delhi. The 2nd and 3rd volumes cover Kanpur and Lucknow. The concluding 4th volume notices Jhansi, Calpee, and Gwalior. There are 17 maps, charts, and ground plans in this work. An interesting portion of the set is the complete text of the court martial of Mangal Pande. This set is a reprint of the set originally published between 1893 and 1912
