George Bruce Malleson, who experienced the Mutiny as an eye-witness, is an essential part of the corpus of material that deals with the history, and consequences of the Revolt of 1857 This concise book gives a complete and critical notice of the mutiny, and is impartial in his treatment of the subject. The books starts with the occurrences of the earliest signs of disaffection, and proceeds chronologically to give informed and knowledgeable accounts of the major events and persons – both native and British, connected with the revolt. The book uses the native spellings of the cities notices, and spells Delhi as Dehli, Kanpur not as the usual Cawnpore, but Kanhpur (the city of Kanha, in the form of a husband), Lucknow becomes Lakhnao. The author was also the co-writer, along with John Keay, of the definitive 6 volume work on the mutiny.
