Indian Voices of the Great War, edited by David Omissi, presents the voices that could tell the Indian story of the First World War. Summary of the Book The Indian story of the First World War has been seldom told. This book contains a collection of letters written by the Indian soldiers who served in France and other parts of Europe during the time. They had to fight alongside other soldiers who belonged to different countries, followed different culture, customs, spoke different language, and also had different colour. The letters bring out the unsettling experiences of the Indian soldiers in Europe, by providing an intimate and disturbing picture of the Western Front. By turns, the book is poignantly witty and keenly melancholic, leaving the reader thinking about the grave and inhuman effects of war. About David Omissi David Omissi is a senior lecturer in history at the University of Hull. He was a Prize Research Fellow at Nuffield College, Oxford. His foremost teaching and research interests lie in modern Indian, Imperial and military history. David has also authored: Air Power and Colonial Control - The Royal Air Force, 1919–1939 and The Sepoy and the Raj - The Indian Army, 1860– 1940. He has co-edited the book, The Impact of the South African War, with Andrew Thompson.
