Information Technology (IT), covering today computers and other tools collecting, storing and disseminating information, is fast becoming a part of everyday life. In India, crops and seeds have their evaluation, charactermation and multiplication by computers. Experimentation with computer used for rural planning in Karnataka and Gujarat are already a success. Computer has affected the water data management for a water resources information system. While land reforms have been implemented on computers, Computerised Rural Information System Project (CRISP) and decentralised planning in districts using computers (DISNIC) have both become a reality. The above are just a few examples in the primary sector, beside computer-based weather forecasting and environment information system (ENVIS). Computer applications in the secondary sector of steel, oil, natural gas, coal, power and other manufacturing industry are already a legend. The nascent growth of computer in the service sector is a recent phenomenon affecting banking, general insurance, health, education, telecommunications, road, railways, airlines and the police. Interestingly, there is a new focus on computerisation in the leisure sector, involving newspaper, television, books, art and culture, and games and sports. Computer can be used even in all the Indian languages for such work as land records.
