About Rama Mehta Rama Mehta was born in Nainital. She was one of the first women to be appointed to India’s foreign service. She became a top sociologist, lecturer and novelist, and was forced to resign her position when she got married. She was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1979 for her book Inside the Haveli.
