Institutions and Inequalities is an educative volume of original essays from well-renowned Indian and Western sociologists Ramachandra Guha and Jonathan P. Parry, written in honour of Andre Beteille, one of the India’s eminent sociologists. Summary of the Book Andre Beteille’s works match theory with realistic data, usually outspreading and occasionally debating the arguments put forward in his previous works over the decades. These essays respond to a wide spectrum of Andre’s interests: some are based on exhaustive fieldwork, some on archival study, some on studies focussed on individuals, and others concerning social communities. Most of the essays focus on India, and two essays discover disparities in China and Russia, and Japan and England respectively. Institutions and Inequalities is a book that talks about the comparative absence of modern sociological research on the social developments and concerns of industrialization in India. It also discusses the mounting incoherence between the old-fashioned apprehensions of Indian sociology with caste and ceremonial depictions and ethics, and the study of industrial labour. It emphasizes the need for reassuring an accord between the two. Parry and Guha’s genius has been brought out in all the essays compiled in this book. About the Authors Ramachandra Guha is one of the most revered Indian historians and writers. He is well known for his books: India after Gandhi, Makers of Modern India, and Gandhi before India. Dr. Guha completed his fellowship at the Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta and he currently serves as the Sundaraja Visiting Professor in the Humanities at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. He lives in Bangalore. Jonathan P. Parry is Emeritus Professor of Anthropology at the most reputed London School of Economics and Political Science. His main research interests are the classical anthropological themes of marriage, caste, and kinship, for which he has studied first-hand, extensively, the social situations in remote, rural parts of India. Some of the titles compiled by him are Caste and Kinship in Kangra, and Death in Banaras.
