About Hal Varian Hal Varian is an American economist. He books focus on macroeconomics and information economics. Hal Varian was born in Wooster, Ohio, in 1947. He graduated with a BS in economics from MIT. He has taught at various prestigious universities including Oxford, Stanford University, MIT, and the University of Michigan. He is an Emeritus Professor at the University of California.
