Salient Features A “How to Use this Book” section following the preface walks students through special features and exercises. Colorful icons in the margin highlight other-oriented text passages. “Considering Others” boxes in each chapter emphasize empathy development and additional forms of “other consciousness.” “Understanding Diversity” boxes feature gender and diversity issues and findings in interpersonal communications research. “Electronic Connections” boxes in most chapters highlight issues and effects related to mediated interpersonal communications. We know of no other interpersonal text that addresses these topics to the same extent. “Recaps” after each major discussion and summaries at the end of each chapter reinforce learning and provide a built-in study guide for students. Supplemental readings, cartoons, poems, fine art, and other photographs complement text instruction and provide visual stimulation. The text places an emphasis on ethics throughout the text. Additional issues are offered for student discussion under a separate heading in the end-of-chapter exercises. In addition to the “Ethical Questions” section, the end-of-chapter exercises include two other sections: “Comprehension Questions” and “Critical Thinking Questions.” Each chapter also has a “For Your Journal” exercise and “Learning with Others” (collaborative) exercises. “Communication Experiences” — in-text exercises — promote immediate interactive learning of concepts and skills. A chapter outline and chapter opening objectives orient students to the contents in each chapter. Boldface terms and a glossary at the end of each chapter highlight important concepts and terminology for students. This is the first interpersonal text on the market to have an Instructor's Annotated Edition.
