Taxonomy deals with the kinds of plants and their classification. Since it is based principally on morphology it will be necessary to deal also with the special morphology of the groups studied. In Taxonomy three general considerations may be taken up: (i) Classification. (2) Nomenclature. (3) Identification. The Classification of Plants. In classifying plants, the aim is to represent as far as possible, our idea of the natural relationships of the plants, and the history of descent from the more primitive and ancient to the more specialized and modern. A system of classification arranged in this way constitutes a natural system. In such a system we proceed from broad groups to more limited ones, in succession, until the individuals are so similar as to permit of no further separation. The groups mainly used at present are : Kingdom :âPlants or Animals. Sub-kingdom. Class. Sub-class. Series. Sub-series. Order. Family. Tribe. Genus. Species. Variety. The Higher Plants (so-called " flowering plants"), Sub- Kingdom Spermatophyta, may be divided into natural groups as follows :â Class I.âGymnospermse. Order i, Cycadales (Cycad Group) i Fam. 75 sp. " 2, Coniferales or Pinales (Pine group) 3 Fam. 350 sp. " 3, Gnelales (Gnetum group) i Fam. 50 sp. Class II.âAngiospermse. Sub-class I.âMouocotyledon.es. Series I.âHydros. Order i, Pandanales (Bur-reed group) 3 Fam. i00 sp. " 2, Fluviales (Pond-weed group) 7 Fam. 220 sp. Series II.âGlumiflor. Order i, Graminales (Grass and sedge group) 2 Fam. 6500 sp.
