Set during the Norman Conquest, Ivanhoe tells the story of a knight who returns home to claim his rightful inheritance, and takes part in a battle against the usurper King. Sir Walter Scott brings alive the tales of chivalry and yeomanry in this classic novel. Summary of the Book Sir Wilfred of Ivanhoe had joined King Richard in the Crusades. After Richard’s capture, he returns home to fix his failing relationship with his father. He discovers that Prince John, Richard’s brother, has usurped the throne in Richard’s absence, and that he’s spreading lies about Richard’s death. Wilfred participates in a tournament to study the situation. He proves his skill with the lance and sword, earning the respect and love of the crowd. However, he may not be the only unknown figure at the tournament, for among the other contenders, there stands a man who is gaining notoriety in Sherwood forest. This man, Robin of Locksley, is plotting to rid the country of John’s tyranny, for he supports the one true king. About Sir Walter Scott Sir Walter Scott was a Scottish novelist. He is also remembered for writing Rob Roy, Waverley and The Lady of the Lake. Ivanhoe was adapted into several movies, most notably in 1953 directed by Richard Thorpe and starring Robert Taylor, Elizabeth Taylor, Joan Fontaine and George Sanders. This book is largely responsible for reinventing the Robin Hood myth as that of a man with a merry gang.
