Jane Eyre is Charlotte Brontë’s timeless classic about a woman’s coming of age. Summary of the Book Jane Eyre’s life couldn’t get worse. She lives at her maternal uncle’s house, if only to fulfil his dying wish. Mr. Reed is a nice man, but once he dies, his wife begins to mistreat Jane. In the dismal house, Jane’s only friend is the maid, Bessie. Soon, Jane is sent to Lowood Institution on the recommendation of an apothecary for her health. At the institute, she is under the eagle eye of the cruel director, Mr. Brocklehurst. She eventually becomes a teacher at the school, leaving it for a governess’ post following her friend’s example. This brings her to a quaint household, and into the companionship of Adele Varens of Thornfield Hall. Once there, she meets the strangely mysterious and melancholy Mr. Rochester, the master of the house. However, despite his irresistible charm, Edward Rochester hides a dark secret in his past, one that he trusts to no one. About Charlotte Brontë Charlotte Brontë was an English novelist, best remembered for this and her other novels: Shirley, Villette and The Professor. Charlotte was the eldest of the three Brontë sisters, and along with Emily and Anne, she has risen into the list of greatest writers to have ever been published. Jane Eyre was adapted into several films, most recently by Cary Fukunaga in 2011 starring Mia Wasikowska as Jane Eyre, Michael Fassbender as Rochester and Judi Dench as Mrs. Fairfax.
