John Donne was a great writer for many different reasons but one of them is certainly his ability to express the nervous struggle between spiritual and fleshly impulses. His range of emotion is extraordinarily wide, his tone is dramatic and conversational, his approach to a subject is fresh and original, involving striking comparisons.
