Journey to the Centre of the Earth is a classic adventure novel by Jules Verne. In it, three people embark on a quest to find a crater in an Icelandic volcano: one that will lead them into a hidden world beneath the Earth. Summary of the Book On a slow day in the month of May, Professor Lidenbrock returns home to examine his latest purchase: an original runic manuscript of an Icelandic saga written by Snorri Sturluson. In this manuscript, he finds a code left behind by Arne Saknussemm. After decoding the message, he learns that the Icelandic alchemist Arne Saknussemm discovered a crater which led to the centre of the Earth. Following Arne’s message, Lidenbrock takes his nephew Alex on a seemingly doomed journey. They go to Iceland, where they hire a guide named Hans. The trio journeys to the volcano of Snæfellsjökull, where, as Arne’s message tells them, they will find the crater to the centre of the Earth. They make their way down this pathway, losing their path along the way. When they reach the end of the path, they make a startling discovery. Beneath the surface of the Earth, there lies a hidden realm which is trapped in the prehistoric age. Here, ancient creatures still roam free, and no one else but they know that this place exists. If Lidenbrock and his comrades can return, this discovery will make them rich beyond their wildest dreams. However, as they venture deeper and deeper into this world, one thing becomes clear. Returning might not even be an option. About Jules Verne Jules Verne was a French novelist known for his works of science fiction.
