Known for the creation of the Bengali fictional character Kakababu, he was considered one of the best writers in the Bengali language. A graduate of the University of Calcutta, Ganguly was awarded the Sahitya Akademi award in 1985 and the 1983 Bankim Puraskar for his novel Those Days (Sei Samaya). A prolific writer, he sometimes favoured pseudonyms, using Nil Lohit, Sanatan Pathak, and Nil Upadhyay. He also wrote: Sabuj Dwiper Raja, Kakababu O Sindukrahasya, Kakababu O Bajralama, Santu Kothay, Kakababu Kothay, Pahar Churae Atanka and Golokdhandhay Kakababu.
