Akbar received his secondary education from the Calcutta Boys' School. He acquired his BA degree from the Presidency College, Calcutta, in the year 1970. In the year 1971, he began with his career working as a novice journalist for one of the leading newspaper, The Times of India. After that he also worked as a feature writer and sub-editor, for the The Illustrated Weekly of India. He was also the editor of a leading political weekly called SUNDAY, a part of the Ananda Bazar Patrika group, Calcutta. Akbar was the one to edit and design the prominent daily The Telegraph. Presently, he works as the Editorial Director of Headlines Today, an English news channel that is a part of Living Media group.
