The name is said to originate from an Italian Princess, Anne-Marie, Countess of neroli, who used the oil as a perfume and to scent her gloves and bathwater. Used as an ingredient of Eua de cologne from Victorian times. A very expensive oil, as it takes a great mass of flowers to make thimbleful of oil.
