This is the narrative of an American missionary who travelled in India during the years 1857 and 1858. The book give a vast array of personal observation and notices on various aspects of India; among the events and people notices, the reader will find chapters describing its popular history, people and castes, the thugs, the mendicants, the religion and mythology, further, there are notices of temples, monuments, mausoleums, palaces; also included are amusing anecdotes about the daily life and customs of the people, the religious festivals, idol worship etc. There is also a narrative of the Mutiny of 1857, which the author bided in Nanital, and received first hand accounts of various events during the course of the Mutiny. As the author was a missionary, there is a distinct touch of missionary favour, and numerous tables that illustrate the current state of the Christian missions in India.
