Walt Whitman, one of the most creative writers in American literature, pioneered a daringly novel form of poetry that has had a significant impact on literature around the globe. His only published work is Leaves Of Grass. It was hailed by Ralph Waldo Emerson as "the marvellous gift... the most astounding piece of wit and wisdom that America has yet offered" when it was first published in 1855 with just twelve poems. The book was revised, expanded, and updated during the course of Whitman's life as the author's experiences and the history of the country evolved and developed. Whitman wanted to produce something that was distinctly American. He was successful there. His poetry are deeply ingrained in the spirit of the United States.
