The Centre for Economic and Social Studies has initiated research programme on Living Standards to analyse the household data on consumer expenditure and unemployment. Its objective is to promote increased use of unprocessed rich household data contained in the NSS schedules for poverty analysis. The significant features of this study is that it demonstrates that poverty analysis can be carried out at district level from the existing information and poverty estimates can be provided for well defined classes. The volume presents class specific poverty levels at district level for Andhra Pradesh. The study brings out clear-cut patterns in the class composition and poverty levels. The cross district comparison suggests that although all classes gain from development, disparities widen. The information on land and expenditure distributions provided at district level offers ample scope for policy analysis.
