He authored influential works on Indian philology, military history, manuscripts, and Dravidian origins, notably arguing that Dravidians were India’s original inhabitants. As editor, translator, and curator, Oppert advanced Oriental studies. He died in Berlin, unmarried and childless, in 1908.
