Summary of the Book In the shroud of night, on July 27, 2005, four U.S. Navy SEALs: Navy Lieutenant Michael P. Murphy of SEAL Delivery Vehicle Team 1, Gunner's Mate Second Class Danny Dietz from SEAL Delivery Vehicle Team 2, Sonar Technician Second Class Matthew Axelson from SEAL Delivery Vehicle Team 1 and Hospital Corpsman First Class Marcus Luttrell, of SEAL Delivery Vehicle Team 1 dropped into Afghan saddle between Sawtalo Sar and Gatigal Sar, one and a half miles from their target. They were trusted with a mission to assassinate Ahmad Shah, a known Taliban associate with ties to Gulbuddin Hekmatyar. However, the team was sighted by locals who they spared, preferring mercy over murder. Their faith was betrayed as they were ambushed by Shah's men. Only one man escaped to tell the tale, and this is his story. About Marcus Luttrell Marcus Luttrell is a former US Navy SEAL. He received the Navy Cross and Purple Heart for his bravery in fighting the Taliban during Operation Red Wings. A graduate of Sam Houston State University, Luttrell trained for the U.S. Navy SEALs from the age of fourteen and enlisted in 1999. In his eight year service he reached the rank of Petty Officer First Class. The story involving Operation Red Wings was made into a Motion Picture in 2013.
