Only one man escaped to tell the tale, and this is his story. About Marcus Luttrell Marcus Luttrell is a former US Navy SEAL. He received the Navy Cross and Purple Heart for his bravery in fighting the Taliban during Operation Red Wings. A graduate of Sam Houston State University, Luttrell trained for the U.S. Navy SEALs from the age of fourteen and enlisted in 1999. In his eight year service he reached the rank of Petty Officer First Class. The story involving Operation Red Wings was made into a Motion Picture in 2013.
