Jane Eyre is a classic coming-of-age story of a woman and her struggle to make ends meet. In it, Charlotte Brontë portrays a strong woman trying to eke a career for herself as a governess and coming across a man she cannot ignore. Summary of the Book After the death of her parents, Jane Eyre went to live with her maternal uncle. After his death, she continues to live in the house, but she is constantly abused by his wife. The only friend Jane has in the house is the maid, Bessie. Jane is sent to Lowood Institution after an apothecary recommends her admission citing her poor health. There, she encounters the cruel director, Mr. Brocklehurst. After a few years, she becomes a teacher, eventually resigning to follow the footsteps of a friend and become a governess. Her search for a job brings her to Thornfield Hall, where she accepts the post of a private tutor for Adele Varens. There she meets Edward Rochester, a man as mysterious as he is charming. What is it about Rochester that makes Jane feel he is not like other men? What secrets line the closet of his heart? About Charlotte Brontë Charlotte Brontë was an English novelist, best remembered for this and her other novels: Shirley, Villette and The Professor. Charlotte was the eldest of the three Brontë sisters, and along with Emily and Anne, she has risen into the list of greatest writers to have ever been published. Jane Eyre was adapted into several films, most recently by Cary Fukunaga in 2011 starring Mia Wasikowska as Jane Eyre, Michael Fassbender as Rochester and Judi Dench as Mrs. Fairfax.
