Lovers' Vows is a comedy of manners and mistaken identity, adapted by Mrs. Inchbald from August von Kotzebue's German play Das Kind der Liebe (The Child of Love). The play revolves around the entanglements of romantic relationships, social class, and the consequences of misunderstandings. The plot centers on a young woman, Amelia, who is in love with an aristocrat, Sir William, but is also pursued by the passionate and somewhat reckless Count Cassel.
