Madame Bovary is the debut novel by the French writer, Gustave Flaubert, and was much ahead of its time, for its sheer content that vividly depicted infidelity of a married woman who ached for love and desire to get away from a dull life. Summary of the Book Emma Bovary, as a character, was considered an outrageously indecent woman by the then critics. The lady, forlornly married to a devoted doctor, yearns for an escape from the void and frivolities of married life. She gets into a passionate affair with a man called Rodolphe. The book depicts the plethora of emotions that whirl around love, adultery, assurances, collapses and the social life in that period. The plot depicts subtle layers of normal human tendencies and describes how the story of Emma concludes. Madame Bovary has also been adapted as a motion picture. About Gustave Flaubert Gustave Flaubert was one of the most cherished novelists and playwrights of France. The aesthetics of his works are an absolute delight and reflect well in his writing. He belongs to that era of literary movement when realism and romanticism were broadly written on. He has also authored Sentimental Education, Salammbo, Three Tales, The Temptations of Saint Anthony, and Memoirs of a Madman among many other works.
