Madame Bovary is the first novel penned by the French writer, Gustave Flaubert. It depicts the infidelity of a married woman, who aches for love and desire, to get away from a dull life. Summary of the Book Emma Bovary, the protagonist of this novel, was considered disgraceful by the then critics. The lady, miserably married to a devoted doctor, longs for a sweet amnesia of escape from the void and trivialities of married life. She gets involved in a passionate affair with a man called Rodolphe. The story, quite vividly, portrays the plethora of feelings that whirl around love, disloyalty, reassurances, and failures in the background of the social life during that period. The plot subtly explores the layers of normal human tendencies. Madame Bovary has been adapted into major motion pictures. About Gustave Flaubert Gustave Flaubert was one of the most cherished novelists and playwrights of France. The aesthetics of his works are an absolute delight and reflect well in his writing. He belongs to that era of literary movement when realism and romanticism were broadly written on.
