Madame Bovary is a hard-hitting scandalous story set in 19th century France that resonated with many women when it came out, causing quite a stir. The novel revolves around the life of Emma Bovary, a beautiful but bored housewife who is married to a good-hearted but dull doctor. She only finds solace in the sentimental romantic novels she reads, and little else brings her joy, including the birth of her daughter. The choices made by Emma throughout her life and its consequences on her husband and daughter are what Madame Bovary is all about.
