Makers of Modern Asia is a compelling account of the rise of the Asian countries in the 21st century, not only in terms of various economic indicators, but also in terms of their increasing political significance in world affairs. Summary of the Book Dr. Guha brings out his scholarly insights yet again in Makers of Modern Asia. He reworks our perception of the contemporary Asia and its role in world's political affairs, based on its political leaders who served to launch what is now augured as the Asian century. The growth of the Asian countries is not only measured based on economic parameters like per capita income, share of global trade or gross national product, but also on the importance of political decisions these countries make that have their effect on a global platform. The book discusses various decisions and struggles that nationalists went through to build the countries of their vision. The list includes Gandhi, Chiang Kai-shek, Ho Chi Minh, Mao Zedong, Jawaharlal Nehru, Zhou Enlai, Sukarno, Deng Xiaoping, Indira Gandhi, Lee Kuan Yew and Zulfikar Ali Bhutto. About Ramachandra Guha Ramachandra Guha is one of the most revered Indian historian and writer. He is well known for his books: India after Gandhi, Makers of Modern India and Gandhi before India. Dr. Guha completed his fellowship at the Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta and he currently serves as the Sundaraja Visiting Professor in the Humanities at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. He is also a columnist for Hindustan Times and The Telegraph. He has been honoured with the prestigious Padma Bhushan and Sahitya Akademi Award among several other recognitions. He currently resides in Bangalore.
