Malgudi Adventures: Classic Tales For Children is a compendium of some memorable tales written by R. K. Narayan. Summary Of The Book This book narrates the many adventures from the unforgettable South Indian town of Malgudi. This compilation includes tales like Margayya and Balu, The Navaratri Adventure, Nataraj’s Predicament, A Tiger in the School, and The Train Comes to Malgudi. Other short tales in this book include An Afternoon With Mr. Sampath, A Tryst at the Temple, A Cobra For a Companion, and Leela and the Headmaster. Margayya and Balu is the tale of Margayya, who sits under the banyan tree and offers advice to the citizens of Malgudi. The tale highlights his relationship with his son Balu, who dumps his father’s ledger into the gutter. On the Sands of the Sarayu is about Chandran, who falls deeply in love on the banks of this river. The Navaratri Adventure narrates the experiences of Babu, who tries to set up the navaratri light display for his sisters, and instead ends up plunging the entire house into darkness. Malgudi Adventures: Classic Tales For Children also has the story of a young snake charmer boy and his monkey Rama. It is also inclusive of the story of Raju, who decides to become the local tour guide when a new train station is set up in Malgudi. Narayan Rasipuram Krishnaswami Narayanaswami, popularly known as R. K. Narayan, was among the most popular English writers from India. His works include Swami and Friends, The Dark Room, The Bachelor of Arts, Waiting for the Mahatma, The Vendor of Sweets, The Painter of Signs, The World of Nagaraj, Grandmother's Tale, Talkative Man, My Dateless Diary, Gods, Demons and Others, and A Story-Teller's World. His works are noted for their simple language, simple settings, wit, and humour. He found something extraordinary in ordinary situations and employed everyday situations to narrate his tales. His tales are all essentially Indian at heart. The creator of Malgudi was born in 1906 in Madras. Narayan was brought up by his maternal grandmother and completed his early education from Madras. He received his BA from the Maharaja College of Mysore. He worked as a schoolteacher and later as a reporter before indulging in his passion for writing. Narayan has many prestigious awards like the Padma Vibhushan, AC Benson Medal, and the Sahitya Akademi Award to his credit. He was married to Rajam and they had a daughter. He died aged 94 in 2001.
