Premchand was a representative litterateur of India's new national and democratic consciousness. The realistic portrayal of his era and society is unique. When he started writing, the clouds of the First World War were looming over the world. When death snatched the pen from his hands, preparations were being made for the second world war. Meanwhile, many changes took place in world human culture. India was also affected by these changes and also helped in those changes. Premchand's novels and hundreds of his stories are the proof of what the Ganga of Indian mass culture has given in the stream of vast human culture. 'Manorama' is a social novel of Premchand. Through Rani Manorama, Premchand has tried to weave the plight of women of that time into this novel. Be it Chakradhar's marriage or Nirmala's separation, all the events of this novel are the result of the immediate social system.
