It consists of edicts laid down by the legendary lawmaker Manu, outlining how mankind must conduct itself. It is presently controversial for its views on women and their rights. Manu was the first king of the Earth, and his laws have become a large part of Hindu culture. Hindus believe that all mankind are descended from Manu, and that his laws describe how man must conduct themselves to enjoy a just life. This collection was originally put together by Manu’s disciple, the Brahma Rishi, Bhrigu. This book teaches readers how each caste is supposed to behave. It lays the foundation for the Hindu Caste System, and guides Hindus with regards to their responsibilities and duties. About Manu Manu is a mythological figure, considered to be the progenitor of humanity in Hinduism. He was mentioned in the Mahabharata as the wisest of all mankind, and it is said that the Sanskrit word for human beings, Manava, is derived from his name.
