In this biography, Roger Bruns tells the story of one of the most stalwart warriors of freedom and equality, that of the Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. Summary of the Book In the 1950s, the American populace saw an event that rocked the nation. One man stood before them, voicing the cries of past generations, one that had been continually silenced. One man stood before them with a dream. It was a dream deeply rooted in the American Dream, that of equality, demanding that all men be treated equal. He spoke with a verbosity not usually witnessed, a passion for the people that burnt like a brush fire. His voice spread across the masses who flocked to him, and he reached their hearts like few before him had succeeded in doing. His teachings evoked the philosophy of Mahatma Gandhi, and in the years since his terrible fate, he has become just as significant to the human race as Gandhi himself. He spoke to them of the dream that he’d shared with Rosa Parks, the woman who would not give up her seat on the bus to a white man as she was forced to. The Emancipation Proclamation hadn’t done its job. The millions of Negro slaves who rejoiced at that event had yet to see its fruition in the hearts of their American brothers and sisters. A hundred years had not done what it needed to; it had not given the other people in the country the power to remember that there was no difference between a black man and a white. One hundred years after the Proclamation, the “Negro” was still languishing in the corners of American society. He spoke to them, promising that there will neither be tranquillity nor rest in America until they had received their due rights. He dreamt that one day, in Alabama, with its vicious racists, with its Governor whose lips dripped with the words of interposition and nullification, little black boys and little black girls would be able to join hands with little white boys and little white girls as sisters and brothers. He had a dream that day. There have been few men who have walked the Earth with the sheer tenacity and charisma displayed by the Reverend Martin Luther King Jr., and there is no doubt that there will be fewer still like him in the days to come.
