The book brings together selected articles on Marxism in general and the Indian Left movement in particular, published in Economic and Political Weekly and Seminar magazines, during the last three decades. These articles presents critical analysis of the theory and practice of the Indian Left vis-à-vis Marxism. Though written on various occasions, the main thread running through them is the overriding concern to understand and analyze the socio-political reality of India through lens that may be different from those adopted by either the mainstream parliamentary Left ot the underground armed leftist forces---both swearing by Marxism. In order to overcome the myopic vision that had crippled the movements of both these two currents, these articles reflected an urgent need to revisit the Marxian canon, and in a spirit of honest inquiry, sift out the chaff of the irrelevant from the grain of the relevant, the temporary from the lasting, the exterior from the quintessence.
