A textbook for every science and engineering graduate, Materials Science is meant for graduates who wish to kick start yet another round of studies with a bang. Summary Of The Book Materials Science serves as an examination guide, a self-study manual and even a good primer to lay the foundations for advanced studies. The book covers a large syllabus, encompassing all the material needed for several competitive examinations including the Indian Engineering Services examination (IES), the Indian Administrative Service examination (IAS), the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE), and the AIME as well as Post Graduate students.. The book is divided into eighteen chapters which includes an introduction which explains the use and need of material science. Each subsequent chapter focuses on a particular property of materials and goes on to show how they work in a wide range of materials. It begins with Atomic Structure and Electronic Configuration, and moves into structure and geometry of Crystals. The chapter Bonds in Solids contains topics like Comparison of Bonds, Types of Bonds, Covalent Bond, and Chemical Bonds. The chapter Crystal Imperfections gives an introduction to the topic and Frank-Read Source. The next chapter, X-rays lists Properties, Characteristics, Origin and Introduction of the subject. Deformation of Materials, the 8th chapter consists of Elastic, Plastic deformation, Work Hardening, and Season Cracking. Diffusion in Solids lists the Classification, Vacancy Mechanism, Direct Interchange Mechanism, Inter-Diffusion, Diffusion Couple, and other topics. Theory of Alloys has topics such as, The Phase Rule, The Lever Rule, Eutectic Systems, and Phase Diagrams. Phase Transformations, Heat Treatment, Organic Materials, Electrical and Magnetic Properties, Corrosion, Mechanical Properties, Photoelectric Effect, Powder Metallurgy and Electron Theory of Metals are the other chapters present in this book. This book has been written for undergraduate students. It not only covers the principles and theories of the subject but also facilitates understanding of how these principles are applied in real life and how they are used in engineering. The book is structured so that the introduction provides a strong base on which all subsequent chapters elaborate and expand. Each chapter picks up a specific area and topic and applies the theories explained in the introduction. About The Authors G. K.
