The seventh edition of Mechanical Engineering Design marks a return to the basic approaches that have made this book the standard in machine design for over 40 years. At the same time the textbook has been significantly updated and modernized for today's engineering students and professional engineers. Working from extensive market research and reviews of the 6/e, the new 7/e features reduced coverage of uncertainty and statistical methods. Statistics is now treated (in chapter 2) as one of several methods available to design engineers, and statistical applications are no longer integrated throughout the text, examples and problem sets. Other major changes include updated coverage of the design process, streamlined coverage of statistics, a more practical overview of materials and materials selection (moved to chapter 3), revised coverage of failure and fatigue, and review of basic strength of materials topics to make a clearer link with prerequisite courses. Overall coverage of basic concepts has been made more clear and concise, with some advanced topics deleted, so that readers can easily navigate key topics. Problem sets have been improved, with new problems added to help students progressively work through them. The book has an Online Learning Center with several powerful components: MATLAB for Machine Design (featuring highly visual MATLAB simulations and accompanying source code); the "FEPC" finite element program, with accompanying Finite Element Primer and FEM Tutorials; interactive FE Exam questions for Machine Design; and Machine Design Tutorials for study of key concepts from Parts I and II of the text. Complete Problem Solutions and PowerPoint slides of book illustrations are available for instructors, under password protection. A printed Instructor's Solutions Manual is also available, with detailed solutions to all chapter problems. Key features Mainstream Coverage Of Machine Design Topics, With Moderate Coverage (Only) Of Statistical Methods. The 7/E Will Fit With The Curriculum Needs Of Most Major Engineering Schools; Statistics Is Civered In Chapter 2, But Statistical Methods Are Not Integrated After That, As In 6/E. Coverage In The 7/E Is Much More Concise, And Focused On Major Topics. Excessive Coverage Of Advanced And On-Essential Topics Has Been Removed. Authoritative Coverage Of The Design Considerations For Major Machine Elements (I.E., Gears, Brakes, Clutches). Practical Coverage Of Machine Component Design Is The Legacy Of Shigley--No One Has Done A Better Job Of Covering The Core Content Of This Course & Discipline. Revised And Expanded Problem Sets With Each Chapter. The New Problem Sets Will Not Have Statistical Oriented Problems Integrated To Any Great Degree; They Will Progress From Basic To Challenging In A More Consistent Way. Improved Engineering Mechanics Coverage, And Treatment Of Failure, Fracture And Fatigue In Part Ii Of The Text. This Part, Which Presents The Essential Concepts Needed For Subsequent Component Analysis And Design, Is Now More Clear, Logical And Student-Oriented. New Online Learning Center Will Offer A Wealth Of Learning Resources. The Resources Planned Will Be Wide-Ranging, Offering Several Ways For Students To Approach And Work With Machine Design Material. The New Media Will Give Students Tools For Analysis, Such As Fem And Computational Software (Matlab); Tutorials To Provide Extra Help With Key Concepts; Fe Exam Questions To Help Them Prepare For The Test, Or To Use For General Review; Powerpoints Of Text Figures; And Links To Related Sites. Practical Coverage Of Engineering Materials, Now Moved Up To Part I Of The Text. Location Of The Topic Now Makes More Sense; And Coverage Is Streamlined, Applied Directly To What Readers Need For Machine Design Considerations. See New Chapter Three Does The 7Th Edition Of Shigley Provide Clearer, More Practical Coverage Of Materials? More Accessible Writing Style Evident Throughout The Book.
