Medea and Other Plays is a collection of plays by Euripides. Summary of the Book Based on Greek mythology, Medea tells the story of a distraught wife as she seeks revenge on her husband for trying to marry another woman. Medea, the wife of the hero Jason, discovers that her husband is trying to marry Glauce, the daughter of Creon. She begins to conspire against Creon and Glauce, and eventually, her rage forces her to try and destroy her own family. Several of Euripides’ plays are known for the marked absence of the appearance of Gods, which was a relatively unique concept in his time. This collection also includes: Hecabe, the story of the wife of Priam, King of Troy, Electra, the story of the vengeance of Electra and Orestes, and Heracles. About Euripides Euripides was one of the trio of great playwrights of classical Athens known for their tragedies. He is supposed to have written at least ninety two plays, of which around eighteen have survived. His work has influenced several generations of western writers and philosophers. Medea was adapted into a movie by Pier Paolo Pasolini starring Maria Callas in 1969.
