Television in India completed 25 years of its existence in September 1984. In its Silver Jubilee Year, the Indian Council of Communication Training and Research organized a national seminar on Media Utilization for the Development of Women and Children in collaboration with UNICEF. The seminar brought into focus the needs and problems of women and children in India and deliberated upon the role television and other media have played and can play hereafter to improve the status of these two neglected segments of the society. This volume contains the papers presented by the participants to the seminar. Apart from the role of television to meet the needs of women and children, the papers also make an analysis of the cost of Doordarshan programme for women and children as well as management problems in production of progrmmes for development. About the Author B.S. Thakur (M.A. Journalism, Wisconsin), Professor of Journalism and Communication at Punjab University, Chandigarh has taught at Osmania University and was Teaching Assistant at School of journalism, University of Wisconsin, in his 27 years teaching career. He has done reporting for The Hitavada Nagpur, and editing for the Indian Express, New Delhi. He is a contributing author of The Indian Reporters Guide and co-author of Villagers and the News, Impact of the Radio on Our Villages and Newspaper Reading Habits in Hyderabad Secunderabad. Binod C. Agrawal (Ph. D, Wisconsin) works at Developments and Educational Communication Unit, Space Applications Centre, ISRO, Ahmedabad; has taught at lowa State University and the Indian Agricultural Research institute, Delhi, besides having bee Executive Secretary of the Xth International congress of Anthropological and Ethnological Sciences. His publications include Cultural Contours of Religion and Economics in he Hindu Universe (1980), Television comes to Village: An Evaluation of SITE (1980), SITE Social Evaluation: Results, Experiments and Implications (1981) and Yanadi Response to Change: An Attempt in Action Anthropology (1985).
