In CITIES, we are fortunate to have a supply of safe drinking water, in most places piped to our homes. People in other rural areas may not be as fortunate. If you have followed the news after a disaster abroad or a flood in this country, you will know that water supplies often become unsafe to drink. Sometimes water has to be taken, by tanker, to areas where the water is unsafe; at other times, people are advised to boil water before drinking. If you have been on holiday in remote areas, your family may have used some form of water- purification tablets. It may contain undissolved material- this may comprise visible particles which will settle out on standing or can be removed by filtering. It may contain bacteria that cannot be seen. They may or may not be harmful to you. It may contain dissolved solids or gases, again these may or may not be harmful to you
