Published in the year 2011, Miller & Freund’s Probability And Statistics For Engineers is a book that provides the readers with insights into the fundamental aspects of statistics and probability. Summary Of The Book Although different, Probability and Statistics are related academic disciplines. Probability distributions are often utilized along with statistical analysis and these two subjects are studied together. Miller & Freund’s Probability And Statistics For Engineers covers the basics of statistics and probability, in the context of engineering and science applications. In total, there are 16 chapters in this book. Some chapters include Organization and Description of Data, Inferences Concerning a Mean, Application to Reliability and Life Testing, Factorial Experimentation, and Nonparametric Tests. In the initial two chapters, Johnson has included certain case studies to throw light on the dynamics of simple statistical methods. This book contains a number of exercises and examples to help the readers comprehend the subject better. At the end of this book, Johnson has also included answers for selected exercises. At the starting of each chapter, the readers are provided with a brief introduction of the subject and a number of key terms. There are several guidelines present at the end of each chapter, which help the readers understand the practical applications of the outlined statistical procedures in the chapter. Johnson has given the readers a brief overview of MINITAB, including exercises that are set to test the readers’ understanding and make them more familiar with this application. Miller & Freund’s Probability And Statistics For Engineers also comes with an entire chapter dedicated to present-day ideas on quality improvement. Several data sets in this book are based on Johnson’s personal consulting with engineers and scientists, about the problems they encounter in statistical methods. Towards the end of this book, Richardson has also included relevant information on two-level factorial design. This book is written in a clear and concise manner, which helps the students grasp important concepts quicker. About Richard A. Johnson Richard A. Johnson is an author and professor. Johnson has written Applied Multivariate Statistical Analysis, Business Statistics: Decision Making With Data, and Statistics, Principles and Methods. Johnson completed his doctoral degree in Statistics from the University of Minnesota. He currently serves as the Professor Emeritus in the Department of Statistics at the University of Wisconsin. He is also a Fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics and the American Statistical Association. Johnson has also been the Founding Editor of the Statistics and Probability Letters from 1982 to 2007. His main areas of research interest are large sample theory, statistical inference, life testing and reliability, and applied multivariate analysis.
