The myth of homecoming to Ireland is explored in the present volume through a wide range of works by contemporary Irish novelists and playwrights. By offering a careful analysis of the different motifs underlying the theme, the author succeeds in dealing with the chosen texts from multifaceted perspectives, including many of the issues of postcolonial discourse. While the first section deals with the potential for subversion inherent on the emigrant’s return, the second one focuses on the search for a reconciliation with the native land. “Fate” is also a key term in the book, since the fulfilment of destiny is another fil rouge in the narratives, where it is constantly intertwined with myth. After hinting at the new trends of migration in the aftermath of the so called ‘Celtic Tiger,’ the study copes with the issue at stake by suggesting different and challenging readings of an everlasting literary topos.
