China's Military reforms, since the mid nineteen-nineties, have made a steady progress and spending in defence increased tremendously; keeping pace with the modernisation of its national defence and armed forces. China's process of modernising its armed forces has involved the development of indigenously designed weapon systems. In a way, Chinese leadership is determined to build a solid, all-round military capability to fight not just at the 'gates' but well beyond its 'immediate periphery'. Its terrific performance on the economic front and the speedy modernisation of its armed forces, have cast a long shadow on the spectrum of Asian strategic scene. There is a strong likelihood that by the end of the current decade, China would have procured latest weapons from different countries and all the more by developing indigenous weapons. Drawn on many years of research, this book highlights the Chinese process of modernising its armed forces through the development of indigenously designed weapon systems and the various issues and challenges that would have a bearing on China watchers.
