The recounting of the authors stay in these Islands during his holidays from 1874 to 1903. The author is in love with Java and the account slows. He describes the scenery with such care that it almost seems romantic. Various locations are described: West Java, the Dieng, Prambanan, Central Java, East Java, Buddhist Java, chapters are devoted to Bora Budoor. As with all book on travel and description, this book too provides vignettes into the daily life, customs, religion, rituals, trade and handicrafts and other amusing anecdotes. This book is a reprint of the 1912 edition. With illustrations and vignettes after drawings of Javanese chandi ornaments.
