Mother is the tale of a mother called Pelageya and her son Pavel, who lived in Russia in 1905, just before a major revolution took place. Summary of the Book Mother, by Maxim Gorky, focusses on life in Russia, just before a revolution broke out in the year 1905. Most people belonging to the working class in Russia are caught up with fights against the dominant capitalist setup. Pelageya, the wife of a Russian factory-worker, is not disturbed by the political and social strife around her and chooses to concentrate on her family’s well-being above everything else. However, her son, Pavel, gets actively involved in political activities and movements and this causes his mother to worry about his safety. Gorky has used this sentiment to highlight the broader picture of the mother’s concern for her society as a whole. Pelageya herself becomes a part of her society’s fight against the then established capitalist order in Russia. She manages to contribute a lot for the betterment of her society, enabling people to free themselves from the chains that bind them. About Maxim Gorky Alexei Maximovich Peshkov was a Russian and Soviet writer, a founder of the Socialist realism literary method, and a renowned political activist. His writings often focussed on the lives of individuals of the lowest level of society, describing their agony and difficulties. The author was born in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia, and was raised by his grandmother. He was vigorously involved in politics, being the supporter of the Marxist Movement. It was suspected that Gorky was murdered by Yagoda’s NKVD agents.
