Ali was also chosen as Smuts Fellow, University of Cambridge; National Fellow, Indian Council of Historical Research; Visiting Fellow at the School of Oriental and African Studies, London; and Wilson Fellow at the Woodrow Wilson International Centre for Scholars, Washington, D.C. He was also elected as the Secretary of the Indian History Congress, and later as its General President.
