The Goddess is an avatar of Mother Goddess Shakti and is also one of the Dasa Mahavidyas. Legend has it that the Goddess appeared to protect Dharma which was challenged by an Asura named Madan. The Goddess defeated him and pulled his tongue. The demon then prayed for forgiveness. The popular image of Goddess Baglamukhi has she pulling the tongue of the demon. Symbolically, this suggests that the greatest threat to Dharma is from unwanted speech. There are several legends associated with Goddess Baglamukhi and most of them are popular in the western parts of India. A popular legend says that Goddess Shakti took the form of Baglamukhi to protect the universe from a huge storm that had the capacity to destroy the universe. Shakti temples in western and northern parts of India observe special rituals on the day. Ma Bagalamukhi relieves a person from problems related to his enemies and negative energies. Ma Bagalamukhi is also known as Pitambara. It is believed that she loves yellow colour and hence, material which is yellow in colour is used for her puja etc.
