Narratives from the Margins is a collection of articles on the history of the adivasi communities in India. It discusses a vast range of issues which affect the social and economic lives of the adivasis as well as their culture. It discusses the political regimes among the communities and how new concerns regarding methodology and sources, historiography and colonial concerns, the impact of missionaries, gender issues, the agrarian situation, famines and migration have come up. Trying to throw light on these issues, the editors discuss the formative years of tribal studies in India during the colonial period and the peasantization of the groups. The book also discusses how epics such as Tulsidas's Ramacharitmanas assimilate them into the Hindu fold and how agrarian change has affected the Hos of Singhbhum. Dr. Das Gupta studies social, economic and environmental history of India and also serves as the Associate Editor of the Calcutta Historical Journal. Raj Shekar Basu is an Indian historian and academician who serves as Associate Professor at the Department of History, University of Calcutta.
