Environmental history is a fast developing field of critical enquiry. In both ecological and cultural terms, South Asia is characterized by its diversity. Ecological degradation, and the social conflicts that have come in its wake, have underlined the need for historical research in this field. This work should be of value to ecologists, environmentalists, historians, sociologists and those interested in peasant studies and India's environment.
