Summary of the Book Richard Mayhew is an ordinary Londoner. His oh-so-ordinary world comes crashing down when he stumbles upon a bleeding, injured girl one evening. The girl, Door, asks him to find the Marquis de Carabas who will be able to help her escape her assassins. Once the Marquis finds Door, both of them vanish leaving Mayhew with a hundred unanswered questions. The aftereffects of their intrusion into his life begin to change Mayhew's life for he turns invisible, loses his job and his apartment. Seeking the correction his life desperately needs, Mayhew travels to the hidden world under London's streets and is dragged into a realm he has no hopes of returning from alive.
