The word Rudraksha is made up of the sum of two Sanskrit words "Rudra" and "Aksha". Rudra means Shiva and Aksha means teardrop which means "teardrop of Lord Shiva". It is believed that Rudraksha is a form of Lord Shiva. The story of the origin of Rudraksha is very interesting. According to the Devi Bhagavata Purana there was a Mahabali demon named Tripurasura. This demon had received many boons by performing rigorous penance. He had become very highbrow with the arrival of power. Due to acquiring the power, he started torturing the demons, sages and gods. Due to divine powers, it was difficult to defeat him in battle. Seeing his iniquities, Brahma, Vishnu and other gods prayed to Lord Shiva to destroy Tripurasura. Hearing the prayers of the gods, Lord Shiva closed his eyes and became absorbed in meditation. When Mahadev opened his eyes, some drops of those tears fell down on the earth. Wherever their tears fell on the land, there arose a divine tree called the tree of Rudraksha. Thereafter Lord Shiva took his Aghor form and killed Tripurasura. In this way, there was prosperity was established in the whole world due to the greatness of Rudra. Thereafter religious works were re-enforced. Since then it is believed that the person who holds Rudraksha with pure conscience, always has the grace of Lord Shiva.
